The trombone belongs to the brass family of musical
instruments. It is made of brass. Sound is produced by buzzing your
lips into a mouthpiece, which by itself sounds like a duck call.
Unlike any other musical instrument, the pitches of the trombone are
changed by moving a slide. Moving the slide and buzzing at the same
time makes the traditional sound of a "sliding" trombone. It is
capable of producing mid and low pitches. The trombone is used for
bass lines and melodies within the band.
Due to the large size
of the trombone, students in third grade are not allowed to play the
trombone.
It is recommended that third grade students who are
interested in the trombone should start on the trumpet, then in fourth
grade switch to the trombone. All students in
grades 4 through
8 are able to sign up for the trombone.
